Core Values

"Shaping Health and Safety in ABI"

ABI has an enviable record in improving its health and safety performance. At the heart of this lie certain core values which guide everything we do. These values are set out below together with some explanation of what they mean in practice.

Nothing we do is so important that we can't take time to do it safely

  • We always plan our work, identify the hazards and risks, put controls in place and re-evaluate if things change
  • We don't compromise safety by cutting corners
  • We always have the right documentation and authorisations

We expect everyone to be a leader for safety

  • Lead by example - demonstrate the behaviour you expect of others
  • Behaviour breeds behaviour-your actions speak louder than your words
  • Don't underestimate the impact your behavior has on others
  • Recognise those who contribute to good safety performance

We seek the involvement of all our people

  • We always look for improvements – your suggestions are vital
  • Everybody has a contribution to make
  • Never walk past an unsafe situation

We communicate openly and honestly with our people

  • This is a two - way process
  • We will provide you with the information you need to work safely
  • You will be given the opportunity to provide feedback - use it

Everyone has the right to challenge anyone or anything if they believe safety is compromised

  • Use your right and challenge unsafe acts or conditions – failing to intervene is an unsafe act
  • You should expect to be challenged if you are behaving unsafely and should not be offended
  • You should always feel confident to undertake the task you are given – if you do not feel you have a safe place of work or the right training, experience or equipment, say so

No occupational illness or injury is acceptable

  • Nothing is inevitable
  • All actual and potential incidents and events are reported
  • We learn and improve from actual and potential incidents and events
  • We openly report our performance – good or bad
